6 June 2005   An environmental week was held at the Independence Gardens, Sliema. At a press conference held at this venue it was stated by the department of health that the quality of sea water has improved substantially over the years.
21 April  2005   45 per cent of the water produced by the Water Service Corporation comes from ground water while the rest comes from three reverse osmosis plants: the Cirkewwa one produces nine per cent, the Lapsi one 14 per cent and the Pembroke one produces no less than 32 per cent of the water produced.
The total amount of electricity used up by the reverse osmosis plants amounts to 5.32 per cent of the total energy output.

According to the National Statistics Office reverse osmosis plants produced 18 million m3 of water in 2004. Water supply from the men sea level aquifer is the second highest with pumping stations supplying an average of 681,031m3 per months (26% of total water supply). Borehole production accounts for 167,369m3 . In Gozo, where no reverse osmosis plants are present, pumping stations account for just 6% of the total water supply, whilst boreholes account for 167,369m3 monthly. Link

23 March 2005   The  Malta International Airport Meteorological Office, together with the other member states of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO), celebrated World Meteorological Day commemorating the entry-into-force of the Convention creating WMO on 23 March 1950. Global Issues of Weather, Climate and hydrology were discussed.

23rd February 2005   A public consultation on The Water Framework Directive (2000/60/EC), transposed into Maltese legislation as Legal Notice 194 of 2004 (Water Policy Framework Regulations, 2004) was initiated by means of publishing introductory documents, an economic analysis and information on each designated groundwater body of the Maltese islands on the Malta Resources Authority Internet site. 15th February 2005   The Water Services Corporation is owned Lm372,300 of outstanding water bills from hotels and manufacturing, whilst the commercial and domestic sector owe Lm4.18 million
11th January 2005   The need for rainwater harvesting for agricultural irrigation is discussed in parliament. Agricultural produce cannot depend on secondary class and treated drainage alone since such practice effects the quality of crops grown.

30th December 2004   The Qormi-Marsa watercourse project is completed. Several storm water projects were carried out throughout the Islands.
6th November 2004   The Burmarrad Watercourse project nears completion
24th August 2004   Following the transposition of the EU directive 98/83/EC private water supplies intended for human consumption have to be registered at the Department of public Health.
26th May 2004   1 million allocated by the European Union for the initialisation of the Marsa-Qormi waterfront.
10th March  2004   The Malta Resources Authority (MRA) and the FAO in collaboration with the Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure publishes a Water Policy Consultation Document highlighting the lack of water sustainability in the Islands. A workshop called "A Water Policy for the Future" was also held.

10 September 2003   WSC launches a water conservation campaign to ensure a supply of potable water to the public and promotes the idea of minimising the inefficient use of groundwater resources.
27 August 2003   Regulations transposing water framework directive published in government gazette in draft form.
13 August 2003   La Sicilia reports that an Agrigento hotel, two steps away from the Valle dei Templi, at Porto Empedocle-Vigata, has had to transfer its guests to "the island of the Knights", because of water shortages in the area.
25 July 2003   Power cuts affect water supply in the North of Malta.
13 July 2003   School joins Comenius project on "Water usage in modern Europe."
11 June 2003   WSC board appointed. The Chairman, Mr. Michael Falzon, has been reconfirmed in his position.
11 June 2003   Ministry for Resources and Infrastructure reports that financing for the sewage treatment in Gozo and in the North has been identified. The 9 million € Gozo plant will be partly financed from EU funds and the 12million€ North plant is expected to be funded from the Italian protocol. Both plants will be on line by December 2005. Discussions with the European Investment Bank have been held on the financing of the South sewage treatment plant, expected to cost 70million€.
21 May 2003   The Chamber of Engineers hold their annual conference with the subject "Engineering the Environment."
4-8 May 2003   European Desalination Society organises a conference in Malta on "Desalination and the Environment: Fresh Water for All."
